I'm a pretty causal dresser. I've been trying to bring it up a notch, and i've been getting more into skirts and dresses, especially as it gets warmer. But I hate heels. No, that's not true. I think they are pretty, and I have several pairs, but I hate wearing them. I am impressed by girls who can spend a night in heels without complaining and walking around barefoot after the show.

Anyways, I basically wear keds champions (or knockoffs) every day. I currently have them in black, white, red, and navy. I just discovered that you can custom design your keds online! You can pick your own palate, and even upload a picture, although I don't see how that could end well. The downside is that they are $60, and I prefer to buy my keds at thrift stores for $4 or knock offs at payless for $12.99.

But the keds I designed are so mf ing cute!

Cut eggs in half length wise. Put yolks in a bowl with mayo and mustard and maybe a teaspoon of paprika. The ration is like, 3 mayo:1 mustard. Mix up with fork, or food processor if you like. Spoon the mixture back into the eggs. Sprinkle paprika on top. If you're fancy, add a sprig of parsley or cilantro as garnish. Time to picnic!

OMG next party theme obvi!! At least, next party dessert theme. Not sure how lego themed outfits would go down. The recipe is from Betty Crocker but will need a lot of altering to be made vegan. The circle bumps on top are made with halved marshmallows! Also not vegan.. so Andrew you are on your own. You can make your own marshmallows, but there's still the challenge of cutting perfect cylinders.. maybe you could make cupcakes and cut those in half?

To my delight I recently discovered these snapea crisps in the aisle of my local whole foods! They are very similar to the Japanese freeze dried soybeans I munched on in Tokyo. They are sort of like chips, dry, crunchy, and salty, but healthy and bean like. My tummy says hurray.

I've been working on a little side project recently.

It's an etsy shop! I'm slowly filling it with all kinds of vintage goodies. I have a few too many piles of old skirts, frilly tops, dainty dresses, and accessories. I made a cute spot in my room between the windows (well, window and the bathroom) for the most light and I'm getting pretty well versed at self-timer. I've been hungry for Asian food for the last week. I've gotten Pho, (from Pho Ha at 6th and Washinton), vietnamese hoagies (from O Sandwiches at 9th and Federal), and stir fried veggies from the Chinese place on campus. But the most fun dishes were the ones I made myself (with a little help)!

BeBimBob- Korean staple dish consisting of white rice (preferably sticky) topped with shredded lettuce, carrot, bean sprouts, a meat (I used seitan), and a fried egg in the middle. Then you squirt on Siracha (hot sauce) and some hoisen and mix it all up. Very filling and delisious.

The next night I made sushi! I got to use my authentic Japanese bamboo sushi roller from Japan, and learned that I'm not very good at the rolling part. We made vegetarian rolls, but did use some egg. We had a couple different kinds: scrambled eggs with lettuce, tomato, and carrot; sourcroat with mustard; and peanut butter and jelly.

The scrambled eggs were the best, and I don't think I would do PB&J again, but I did eat every last roll. I had made so much rice that it provided a hearty lunch the next day. Next time I think I'll invest in a cucumber and avocado.

I went shopping around Washington DC yesterday and today looking for cheap but aesthetically pleasing furniture and accent pieces. Found some decent stuff:

Coffee table and clock from Rough and Ready Furnishings (1908 14th St NW. (202)667-7833). I'd never heard of this store and it doesn't have a website, but my mom had gone by it and suggested it. It's part antique store part thrift shop, with shelves overflowing and tables piled on top of eachother, which made the dozen or so people inside seem like a crowd. Everything in the basement was 75% off for the month of January so I would suggest going soon if you are in DC and looking for furnishings. Everything I bought was less than $20 per piece, way better than what Salvation Army was trying to charge for furniture.

The gold bunny is from Salvation Army, $2.

An end table- actually it's a piano bench. Also from Rough and Ready.

Fancy chair, Salvation Army in Bladensburg, MD. Needs a bit of a clean and some care, we'll see how it goes. Might look good painted white.

Desk and vintage suitcase for my room, the desk has names carved into it, and gum stuck under it (gross but authentic?). The suitcase is lined with a nice red velvet. Both from Rough and Ready.

And lastly, some little things for organizing jewelry in on my ~vanity~, from the Wolf St. thrift store in Philly, I believe it's called America Thrift. Prices between $0.45- $2.99.

Also worth mentioning is the store Miss Pixie's Furnishings, (1626 14th St NW, Washington, DC). I didn't buy anything there, it's a little out of my price range, but they had a really great selection and it was reasonably priced, as furniture goes. I was really into this pair of fancy white end tables, but they were $195 each.

So I'm obviously excited to decorate! All we need now is a sofa, some more chairs, a bunch of mirrors, and I guess I still need a bed. The search continues..

Recipe: Tortilla Soup

Makes 4-6 servings

Takes 30-40 minutes depending how agile you are/how many helpers

Costs about $8

Vegan

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

2 teaspoons cumin

a couple squirts of cooking spray (like PAM)

12 Tomatillos, husks removed and pureed until almost smooth

3 ears of corn- remove kernels, save cobs

1 jalapeno- removed of seeds, chopped

1/2 onion- chopped

2 garlic cloves- grated

2 cups water

2 cups vegetable broth

about 10 corn tortillas- cut into strips

2 cups cilantro- chopped

1 lime- for juice and zest

1 avocado- sliced for garnish

~ Simmer water and vegetable broth with the 3 corn cobs (kernels set aside) for 10 minutes, or however long it takes you to cook everything

~Put tortilla strips on a baking sheet, spray with cooking spray, put in oven about 375 deg until crispy, keep an eye on them, but it takes a while

~ Heat extra virgin olive oil in a pot or deep skillet, add onion, garlic, cumin, corn, and jalapeno, cook until soft

~Puree the tomatillos, leave a bit lumpy, add to the vegetables

~ Remove corn cobs from broth, add vegetables, simmer for 10-20 minutes

~Take soup off heat, add cilantro and lime, serve up with a slice of avocado and a handful of tortilla strips. Throw in some nutritional yeast (or cheese) and avocado chunks if desired.

It was yummy!

It's been so cold lately, last night it was -7 degrees Celsius! Usually when its like this, I pull out my Slim Aarons books and dream of being in California or Key West circa 1962 but today, I am leaning more towards Summer night parties. Specifically, the scene in Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette".

The new house has a ( very ) small porch / deck off the kitchen that will be perfect for setting up a temporary canopy + outdoor chandeliers come some summer soirée.

It will be more 'petit' than 'trianon' however.

On Not Being Homeless

Well Hannah put a deposit down on a charming little rowhome in the Italian market area. If everything goes well, we will be signing the lease this week and "Gingham Capers" will have a physical home finally!

I was hoping to document our hunt on here but it turned out that it would only take two days of hunting and one day of deciding.

The move-in date is a little before January 1st so expect fun updates in the coming days while we still post some things similar to earlier posts.

There's something about an animal in formal wear, posing for a commissioned oil painting that just makes me smile. Make it a giraffe in Edwardian dress standing in Classical-style room and you've got interior decorating gold. I plan on scouring every thrift store in the Lehigh Valley for two prime examples of such painting ( all animals will be considered ). I just do not want something that gets anywhere near being kitschy or cutesy ( like that bulldog calendar or even the weimaraner ones that were big in the early nineties ).

I've also always been a fan of the way Amelie had two paintings of animals above her bed ( in her fantastically red room ).

A Little (pink) European Bourgeois

Put Some Nature In Your Home

Having plants indoors makes the air more oxygen-y and can make a room less clinical and more cozy. But taking care of living things can be a pain! Other than just throwing some cut flowers in a vase, here's some neat ideas for adding a bit of green, alive or not:

put some fuzzy moss in a clear glass, a bell jar works nicely too (but it will die without a breathing hole)

nail some drawers to a wall and plant some ivy (or cut some faux ivy out of green paper)

This tree design was made with string and tacks, i like how it bends onto the ceiling. I think it could be complemented well with a mounted dear head or owl plaque under a branch, IDK

Black and white are going to dominate my winter and helping this personal revolution is Lilya Brik. Lilya was a proponent of free love during the early stages of the revolution and a close friend to Stalin. She also took up a love affair with the famous Russian Avant-Garde photographer, Rodenko while still married.

Her dark looks and tendency to dress in dark colors fit not only the constructivist movement of the time, but also my renewed inclination in monochromatics.

how sweet is this bed? it's from written afterwards, a japanese designer, but i couldn't find it on the site, it's probably more of an art exhibition piece than something i can buy and put in my room (sad face).
